Sohrab Fracis presents a 1-hour lecture-style workshop on identity and place in immigrant fiction.
Expanded Sense of Place and Identity in Immigrant Fiction
International Book Award winner, Sohrab Homi Fracis, will show and tell, via illustrative passages from his books, how immigrant stories must evoke both the homeland left behind and the new land the protagonists are making their own. His stories show how, in the process, the immigrants’ sense of place and belonging, as well as their sense of self or identity, expand to accommodate both settings, resulting in a transnational or even global sense of place and an often hyphenated identity.
In a shrinking yet divided and subdivided world, as we approach a contentious national election with immigration policy a central issue, Fracis’s work reflects the push and pull of the matter, enabling a deeper understanding of the immigrant life.
Sohrab Homi Fracis’s book, True Fiction, won the 2023 International Book Award for story collections. Ticket to Minto won the Iowa Short Fiction Award, juried by the legendary Iowa Writers Workshop and described by the New York Times as "among the most prestigious literary prizes America offers." It was the first book by an Asian American to do so. Stanford University Libraries shortlisted his novel, Go Home, for the William Saroyan International Prize. He was Twin Cities Visiting Writer in Residence at Augsburg College and Artist in Residence at Yaddo. He received the Florida Individual Artist Fellowship and the South Asian Literary Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award.
This workshop is presented as part of Jax Book Fest 2024.
