This Life Lab continues an eight-part 'Conservation Series' at Jacksonville Public Library (running May through June). Life Lab is a one hour program featuring local, trained professional professionals offering FREE help on a variety of topics aimed at improving your daily life.
This Life Lab will create awareness on light pollution in Jacksonville and how people can reduce bird collisions and deaths during migration season. There will be a Q&A followed by examples of how Duval County residents can make their own homes safer for birds using bird-safe glass solutions.
Duval Audubon Society's Mission: Connecting people with nature, conserving and restoring natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife.
Johnna Bellen is President of the Duval Audubon Society and a dedicated volunteer with the Lights Out Northeast Florida initiative. Through her leadership and community outreach, she works to connect people with birds and the natural world while advocating for practical conservation solutions in urban environments. Bellen is an active Lights Out Northeast Florida Rescue Walker, participating in early morning monitoring efforts in downtown Jacksonville to document and recover birds that have collided with building windows during migration. The data and specimens collected through this work help raise awareness about the impact of artificial lighting and reflective glass on migratory birds and support efforts to make cities safer for wildlife. She regularly collaborates with community partners to promote bird conservation through education, outreach, and citizen science. Through community programs, Bellen shares practical ways individuals and communities can help protect migratory birds and support healthier ecosystems.
