This introductory workshop will explain the construction of a junk journal and how to use it. You will use recycled, repurposed or found material as well as typical art supplies.
Junk Journals begin in 2008 when people were looking for ways to cut down on the cost of supplies and find ways to use recycled materials in art. Junk Journals are made from items that would most likely be thrown out: mailers, ads, music sheets, menus, cardboard, notices, church bulletins, old books, hymnals, etc. These materials can become simple journals with 7 or 8 papers folded in half and stapled or glued. A simple three hole pamphlet stitch can bind them together. There are more complicated ways to join the pages and several signatures can be bound together to form pages of a "book.” Book covers can be made from any variety of materials that have a more substantial weight like boxes from food items, cardboard, scrapbook paper, covers of old books, foam board, plastic sleeves, etc. Once the book/journal is made the artist can then decorate the interior pages using any variety of materials called ephemera: stickers, pages from magazines or music or books, fabric, buttons, ribbon, string. Paint, rubber stamps, and markers can be added to decorate. Anything goes including found items like tags from clothing, old coins, zippers, leather, ticket stubs. How these things are used in the creation of the journal is as wide open as is any other type of art work. Online sites demonstrate a great variety of ways used to create the journal and add decorative procedures to enhance the pages.
