Life Lab are free workshops offered by trained professionals and volunteers that focus on improving your day to day life. These programs cover a wide range of workshops from gardening to small business needs. No need to bring anything but yourself to participate! The Jacksonville Public Library offers excellent resources for genealogical research for use in the library and/or from home.
About the Workshop: Join us for this overview of genealogy research. Learn about resources, research best practices, and more that you can apply to your personal genealogy projects. This workshop includes an introduction to African-American genealogy research and how to use Census Records, Freedmen's Bureau, and DNA as part of your research.
About the Speakers:
Mary Jeanette Howle is the Corresponding Secretary of the Southern Genealogy Exchange Society and sends correspondence regarding membership, donations, and research. She enjoys researching her and her husband’s families, and it is a pleasure to help others do the same.
Joan Hakala (BA, MLS) is a retired Reference Librarian who worked in Broward and St. John Counties Public Libraries. Her passion is genealogy and she is a volunteer researcher at North Florida Genealogical Society aka SGES. She is a new NFGS/ SGES Board member.
Georgia Pribanic (BA, MLS, Teacher & Principal certification, MBA classes) came to genealogy late in life after retiring from the University of South Carolina as a Reference Librarian with a passion for history. After meeting her biological family in 2001, she wanted to help others find their roots and heritage. Georgia has served on the SGES Board in several capacities currently as Vice-President.
Alana Masters is the current President of SGES and has served in various positions on their Executive Board for the past 7 years. She has been doing genealogy about 8 years now and enjoys digging deep into research. Unconventional research methods, "self-taught" skills and technological knowledge have aided her on her genealogical journey.
