This Foreign Policy Association's Great Decisions program will discuss Ukraine and the Future of European Security with Richard Reiter, Retired Foreign Service Officer.
Topic Description: With reduced U.S. support for NATO and Ukraine, Europe faces strategic uncertainty. The Trump administration has signaled an intention to reduce its security role in Europe. What are America’s stakes in NATO and Europe’s strategic dilemmas, and how might Europe respond?
Facilitator: Richard Reiter is a scholar-in-residence at the University of North Florida where he lectures on European Security and on Climate Change Policy. He served for over thirty years as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. State Department, achieving Senior Foreign Service rank and working primarily in Europe, Brazil and Afghanistan, most recently departing Brazil in July 2023. His work included service as Chargé d'affaires in Iceland, as the Director of the State Department office responsible for the U.S. relationship with NATO, and in the White House as Special Advisor to then-Vice President Joe Biden.
About Great Decisions:
Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book (optional), and meeting in a discussion group to discuss critical global issues facing America today. Each meeting begins with a video lecture on the discussion topic presented by Jeffrey S. Morton, the Pierrepont Comfort Chair in Political Science at Florida Atlantic University and a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association and is followed by facilitator commentary and facilitator-led discussion.
