This Foreign Policy Association's Great Decisions program will discuss the Future of Human Rights and International Law with Professor Darby Scott, Florida State University.
Topic Description: As democracy and human rights retreat globally—and the U.S. pulls back—how can civil society and legal norms remain effective in a divided world? What is the role and force of international law in this era of impunity?
Facilitator: Professor Scott is a clinical professor at the College of Law. Within the Public Interest Law Center, she developed and directs the International Human Rights Advocacy Clinic (2022-present). She previously developed and directed the Farmworker and Immigrant Rights Clinic (2018-2021) and the COVID-19 Veterans Legal Clinic (2020-2021). Prior to joining the College of Law, she served as executive director of the Legal Aid Foundation of Tallahassee, managing all programs, staff, and development; as program director of the FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, concentrating on immigration and human trafficking; as an associate with Hopping Green & Sams, P.A., focusing on appeals and special taxing districts; and as a senior law clerk to the Honorable Robert T. Benton, II, of Florida’s First District Court of Appeal. Professor Scott graduated from FSU College of Law in 2007 with high honors, earning a Certificate in International Law with high honors and admission into Order of the Coif.

Each meeting begins with a video lecture on the discussion topic presented by Jeffrey S. Morton, the Pierrepont Comfort Chair in Political Science at Florida Atlantic University and a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association and is followed by facilitator commentary and facilitator-led discussion.
